We were saved (meaning we have our salvation) by grace (God's riches at Christ's expense) when Jesus died a horrific death on the cross at Calvary to absolve us of our sins. Thank you, Jesus. This sacrificial gift is received by our faith, believing in Him, as our Lord and Savior.
Okay, so now you have said the Sinner's Prayer, sincerely, and are "saved". What now? of course, finding and attending (regularly) a Spirit-filled a church is a very good start. Though I cannot emphasize enough the importance of being a part of the body of Christ. Simply attending church may not be enough.
Once I decided to really commit myself to Christ, I wanted to serve Him in any way I could, not to gain His favor, but because I truly desired to serve Him. I was so blown away once a really learned about the great sacrifice Jesus made for us all. I did it joyfully and without hesitation. There are so many things you can do if you're looking for them. I served (quite literally) for a while in the kitchen every Wednesday night. It was an outreach for the community. I was also a Deacon and visited shut-ins, served on the Church Counsel and even sang on our Praise Team for a time. I also really enjoyed ushering. Being involved, also, helped me to feel more a part of, rather than apart from the Body. It helped me to meet others who had, what I like to call, the "heart of a servant". If you really want to get involved, it won't take long to find an opportunity.
Fellowship is so important. It's also a great way to meet a "mentor". To a new brother or sister In Christ, that's also very important. A mentor should be someone who has been around for a while, someone you feel you can trust, but most important, someone who displays the "fruit of the Spirit" in their everyday life. Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV) "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
I also attended a couple of different Bible studies. This was very helpful as I had a lot of questions when I started reading The Word. There I had people to guide me. Another good reason to find a mentor.
I hope if you are a "new believer" this has been helpful. Though this post was definitely meant for someone new, not all of them will be. So, if you are a "seasoned Christian" hopefully you will have a lot to offer. Please feel free to comment. I look forward to hearing from you.
In Him, Faith
